No trip to Downtown Fort Collins is complete without a visit to Old Town Square!
Originally constructed in 1983/1984, Old Town Square was realized through a public-private partnership between local businessman, developer, and visionary Gene Mitchell and the Fort Collins Downtown Development Authority (DDA). The project consisted of a combination of historic building rehabilitation and new construction infill. Those private improvements generated a tax increment that funded the plaza and a 400-space parking structure at Mountain Avenue and Remington Street.
Old Town Square plaza was reimagined in 2015 through a meticulous renovation project by the DDA that earned international recognition. The enhanced space incorporates interactive elements, including a state-of-the-art performance stage, a kid- and dog-friendly splash pad*, a communal fireplace, a kids' play area, a Little Free Library, and locations for rotating public art installations.
Before Old Town Square was constructed as a pedestrian-friendly hub, the 100 block of Linden Street functioned as a through street for vehicle traffic that continued all the way to Mountain Avenue. Now, it is owned and operated by the DDA as a beloved public gathering space. The City of Fort Collins Parks Department is hired to conduct general daily cleaning/maintenance as well as install and care for the annual flower displays.
