Details

Black history is more than a designated month or commemorative observance. Those who advanced the study of African American history envisioned it as a year-round, interdisciplinary pursuit. This interactive presentation invites participants to engage with Black history through a humanizing lens—one that foregrounds the many stories, epistemologies, and lived experiences that shape it.

Dr. Alexander Pittman is an Assistant Professor of History in the Department of History at CSU, where his work sits at the intersection of Social Studies teaching, History Education, and African American History. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Multicultural and Equity Studies in Education from The Ohio State University (2024), a Master of Science in Management from the University of South Florida (2015), and a Bachelor of Science in Education with majors in History and Social Studies from Central Michigan University (2011).

Dr. Pittman leads History Harvests through History Matters as a way to bring local history out of the archives and back into the community where it belongs. Local and state histories are often oversimplified or reduced to stereotypes — and much of the history of everyday life never makes it into traditional archives, libraries, or museum collections at all. It lives instead with everyday people: in the objects they keep, the meanings they attach to them, and the stories those objects carry.

The next History Harvest will be hosted at the Global Village Museum on June 27th.

Fri, June 12, 6:00 – 7:00 PM

Doors Open at 5:30 PM.

Admission $10
